What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a gentle, safe and effective form of hands-on therapy which primarily focuses on the treatment of your musculoskeletal (muscles, joints, fascia, ligaments) system, organs and central nervous system. Osteopathy is unique from other forms of manual medicine such as physiotherapy and chiropractic in its approach to treatment. We evaluate the structure of the body in relation to its functionality. As a result, it is quickly becoming one of South Yarra’s most popular treatment options for pain relief and management.

Osteopathic treatment is gentle, safe and effective. There are two main categories of techniques utilised by osteopaths; direct and indirect – both of which are practised at Melbourne’s South Yarra Osteopathic Clinic. Direct techniques utilise a level of force in the application. Examples of such techniques are massage, joint articulation, muscle activation, joint manipulation and stretching.

Indirect techniques are when the osteopath works with the body to guide it to freedom of restriction. As a result, this mode of treatment is excellent for children, the elderly and chronic pain. Indirect techniques include fascial unwinding, counter-strain, functional technique and Osteopathy in the Cranial Field.

The osteopathic philosophy differentiates osteopathy from other manual medicine treatments in that osteopaths treat the body holistically; we look at the body as a whole, not just the area where you are experiencing pain or discomfort. We believe that the body’s structure is inherently related to its function so when your joints, muscles or nerves are not operating properly, your health is compromised. Osteopaths encourage the body’s natural ability to heal itself by restoring functionality and in doing this, help the body return to health and wellness.
