Magnesium is a mineral required by the body for healthy function of our bones and nervous system that also plays a major role in controlling inflammation, energy production and the control of blood sugar. From our perspective as Osteopaths, Magnesium is essential for bones and muscles and also for sleep and relaxation. In South Yarra we see patients who may benefit from the addition of magnesium into their treatment plan. These are patients with problems such as recurrent muscle tightness or cramping, those suffering with migraines and headaches, chronic injuries, sleeping issues and those who participate in a lot of sport.

Some symptoms of magnesium deficiency are:

  • Muscle spasms and cramps
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Anxiety and depression
  • High blood pressure

Dietary sources of magnesium include…

  • Leafy greens such as spinach
  • Seeds and nuts including pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and cashews
  • Beans such as black beans and navy beans
  • Brown rice, quinoa and buckwheat

So why am I deficient you ask? There are many things that can contribute to a lowered magnesium level including drinking carbonated drinks, a high intake of sugar or caffeine, stress, alcohol and certain medications. Supplementation is a great way to support injury recovery and/or aid in relaxation and sleep. This can be in the form of an orally ingested powder, topically applied oil or my favorite… Magnesium salts in a nice hot and relaxing bath. At Yarra Osteopathy we stock a high quality oral powder for our patients.

I recently got up close and personal with 350kg of magnesium salts when I tried out a floatation tank. This was an amazing experience for the body and mind and in addition to the benefits of a soak in the magnesium, the effects of 60 minutes of complete sensory deprivation on my nervous system was amazing. I had a wonderful nights sleep afterwards and will most certainly be back for another float!
