This two part Catalyst special (The gut reaction part 1 and part 2), is all about the link between our westen diet and how it is related to a long list of diseases such as asthma, autism, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, emphysema and cancer.
and then follow it up with
This is the best TV I saw in the whole of 2014 and could be a life changer for some.
The synopsis is that the food we eat affects the quantity and variety of bacteria in our gut diet which in turn affects our health. We each have about 1.5 Kgs of bacteria in our gut and scientists are starting to understand the role this bacteria has in our health and well being.
Its all about developing a better understanding of which foods support a healthy gut and which ones we need to moderate because they are not good for our gut bacteria. This is also very interesting because this puts the onus on each one of us to educate ourselves about how our bodies work and to look at what we eat to better manage our health. What an interesting challenge all those social, cultural and emotional reasons for what we eat and when we eat it.
This ties in beautifully with the quote from Hippocrates, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
